Resilience training is of proven value in preventing depression, anxiety and stress-related harm, research also showing it can help people perform better under pressure. Drawing from Chris Johnstone's book Seven Ways to Build Resilience, this course focuses on seven key skills that enhance our ability to cope with, recover from, and even be strengthened by, the impact of adversity.

We start with Storyboarding, looking at how we can map out and design constructive responses to a wide range of challenges by considering the question 'what might a story of resilience look like here?' Storyboarding tools are introduced that make it easier to adapt course contents to the chosen focus of participants, whether their own lives, those they play a role in supporting (perhaps professionally in coaching, healthcare or teaching, or informally with family, colleagues and friends), and/or within groups, communities and organisations.

Drawing on advances in neuroscience that help us understand the impact of our nervous system on how we think, feel and act, we look at how we can apply Emotional First-Aid. We explore a range of practices we can use ourselves and teach others that help people to settle themselves when feeling distressed. We’ll look at useful elements in a crisis drill, drawing on self-compassion, mindfulness and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).

Recognising the impact of the way we think on how we approach difficult situations, the third skill, of Thinking Flexibly, explores how to find and follow thought pathways that help bring out our best. We look at three cognitive skills taught in evidence-based resilience programs around the world.

As the experience of having too much to do is so widespread, the fourth skill we look at is Overload Management. We'll look at principles and practices for dealing with stress and preventing burnout.

The fifth skill is Problem Solving, research showing that teaching problem solving strategies can be an effective treatment for depression. We look at how to build our capacity to work with challenges that don't seem to have a clear or easy solution.

With our sixth skill, Strengthening Support, we take an evidence-based approach to building nourishing relationships. We give attention not only to human relationships, but also to deepening our rootedness within the larger community of life on Earth.

The last of our seven skills is Stickability, drawing on insights from health psychology in looking at how we build, strengthen and maintain positive habits that endure. Seeing Stickability as an active process deepened by learnable practices helps ensure that the benefits of the course, and the resilience skills it explores, are felt long into the future.

Dr Chris Johnstone

Dr Chris Johnstone is one of the UK's leading resilience trainers and has been teaching resilience skills for over thirty years, pioneering the role of resilience training in mental health promotion, coaching practice and the workplace. His books include Seven Ways to Build Resilience and Active Hope (co-authored with Joanna Macy). He teaches online at CollegeOfWelbeing.com, his video-based online course Personal Resilience in an Hour having students from more than fifty-five countries.

Professor David Peters

Professor David Peters

Professor David Peters is founder/director of the Centre for Resilience at the University of Westmister, where his research interests include the psycho-physiology of resilience and recovery, self-care in long term conditions, and the role of non-pharmaceutical treatments within the NHS. He previously worked for many years as a family doctor pioneering the role of integrated medicine at the Marylebone Health Centre in London. He has co-authored six books, is a former chair of the British Holistic Medical Association and edits the Journal Of Holistic Healthcare.

Residential accommodation for "Changing the Frame"  is at Higher Close, a 20 minute walk from Schumacher College. All meals will be provided at the college.

A place can not be guaranteed unless we receive your deposit or payment on your chosen course. If you would like to apply for a bursary, please do this before making your course application.
 

Short Course Bursaries create an opportunity for an individual to experience the powerful transformative learning by joining a course that assists the participant to inspire their wider community and benefits from the participant’s own unique contribution. It is our hope that our bursaries support a wide cross section of participation on our short course programme. The number of bursaries available is limited, competition is strong and funding is not always available for every short course. Please be aware that most bursaries are in the region of 10% – 20% of the course fee so please be prepared to raise funding from other sources.  A bursary award is not intended to cover travel or incidental expenses.

Applications are viewed on a case-by-case basis and we are unable to enter into discussions on any decisions. We generally have many more applications for bursaries than we have funding available. We can only offer one bursary per person per year and priority is given to those who have not attended the college or received a bursary before. To help us support as many people as possible, please only apply if you would be unable to attend the course without a bursary.

Six weeks before the course is due to start all bursary applications will be considered and responded to.  If successful you will be required to accept our Bursary Terms and Conditions.
