Schumacher College celebrates successful Higher Education Review

Thursday, 9 March, 2017

In a report published yesterday, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) reaffirmed the quality and standards of postgraduate provision at Schumacher College.

In September 2016, the student body & College submitted independent reports and evidence to be considered by a QAA Review Panel.  In November 2016, the College underwent an educational oversight monitoring visit; a review team visited the College and met with students, staff and a range of external stakeholders.

The report confirms the judgements of the Higher Education Review Panel; that the maintenance of academic standards of awards offered on behalf of the degree-awarding body, the quality and enhancement of students' learning opportunities and the quality of information about learning opportunities all meet UK expectations.

Three areas of good practice were identified by the Review Panel:
• The community ethos which provides a highly effective network of informal support structures that enhances students' academic, personal and professional potential

• The extensive involvement of visiting UK and international experts who enhance student learning opportunities

• The well-embedded and mutually supportive partnership between the College and the University of Plymouth which enables a distinctive student experience

The Review Panel made one recommendation: to extend the peer observation process across and between all programmes to facilitate the sharing of good practice.  The College will enact this recommendation as part of the Staff Performance Review and Development process from September 2017.  The Panel also made two affirmations of work already in progress.  Both the recommendation and affirmations have been added to an Action Plan and will be published on the College website by 18th May 2017.

Dr. Jon Rae, Head of Schumacher College, said: “We are very pleased that the QAA recognises that the College continues to grow Dartington’s 90 year legacy and reputation for progressive and innovative approaches to learning that is again drawing the attention of learners and educationists worldwide. We welcome the recommendation, and will continue to work as a learning community to enhance learning opportunities for students and alumni.”.
Mark Stone, Head of UK Academic Partnerships at the University of Plymouth, said: “We have a long and positive history of working with Schumacher College, and would echo the QAA’s sentiments about it being a mutually beneficial relationship. It, like all our partnerships, increases the opportunity to study our world-class courses and enhances the experiences of students both on our main campus and at our partner institutions.”

QAA Higher Education Reviews are carried out by experts from universities and colleges in the United Kingdom. The Review Panel comprised of Professor Jonathan Scott, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Student Experience), University of Leicester and Professor Anthony Whitehouse, Elegant International College.

A successful review means that the College can continue to display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the College meets UK standards
