Satish Kumar has made a personal appeal to alumni and friends to help with raising funds for Schumacher College.

The aim is that by the time the College celebrates its 30th anniversary, in the summer of 2021, it will be well on its way to becoming a carbon neutral campus.

In an open letter to alumni, Satish, who founded the College on the Dartington Estate, spoke of his love for a place “where the excitement for learning is deeply felt.” He added:

“As your experience at Schumacher College was transformative and lasting, we are sure that you understand our desire to reinforce the College’s mission and to make it more affordable and accessible to more people so that they too can have a similar transformation.

“We need your help to build a solid foundation for Schumacher College for its next thirty years, to expand our offer and to be able to reach more people around the world.”

Earlier this year a friend of the College gave a generous donation of £2 million to repair the roof of the Old Postern. Now the hope is to match fund that with £2million for a package of work to make buildings around the campus more sustainable.

This includes completing a restoration of the interior of the Old Postern, improving facilities in the kitchens and dining area, introducing solar power to the accommodation blocks, obtaining second biomass boiler, introducing a grey water system, insulating the windows and doors, building a scholarship fund.

Everyone who supports the appeal with at least a £100 donation will become a member of the Schumacher Friends Circle. Their name will be acknowledged within the restored Old Postern and they will be invited to the 30th Anniversary Celebration in May 2021.
