Schumacher College Scholarships 2017 - 2018

Due to generous support of our funding partners, Schumacher College has officially launched three new scholarships; The Arne Naess Scholarship for Holistic Science, The E.F Schumacher Scholarship for Economics for Transition and The David Orr Scholarship for Ecological Design Thinking. Each scholarship is an award of £5,000 and decisions will be recorded within the minutes of Bursary Panels held for each programme.

We welcome scholarship applications from all students, unrelated to bursary applications. The decision of the award will be based on what is deemed by the faculty to be the best response.

To apply for a scholarship, please complete a written statement to the questions asked below for the programme of your choice. The statement should be no longer than 500 words and submitted alongside or preceding your application to study at Schumacher College. Applications must be received by the closing date: 31st March 2017.

Please email scholarship statements to postgradadmin@schumachercollege.org.uk (link sends e-mail). The Postgraduate Admissions team will e-mail you to acknowledge safe receipt of your scholarship application.

Economics for Transition

The E.F. Schumacher Scholarship
Please answer the following question. Your statement should be no longer than 500 words and submitted alongside or preceding your application to study at Schumacher College.

For Schumacher, writing 50 years ago, questions of scale were of the utmost importance to the transition to a humane and sustainable future.  In what ways do you think his insight remains relevant to the world of the early 21st century?'

Holistic Science

The Arne Naess Scholarship
Please answer the following question. Your statement should be no longer than 500 words and submitted alongside or preceding your application to study at Schumacher College.

Arne Naess coined the term ‘deep ecology’ as an attempt to point out that Western culture needs to reconnect to something more satisfying and enduring than yet more economic growth fuelled by increasing levels of material consumption.  Building on this insight,  what is your current understanding of the meaning of  ‘deep’ in deep ecology? Do you see a role for science in developing the senses of ‘deep’ that you perceive?

Ecological Design Thinking

The David Orr Scholarship
Please answer the following question. Your statement should be no longer than 500 words and submitted alongside or preceding your application to study at Schumacher College.

It is now more than 25 years since the principles of ecological design were enunciated yet the practice of ecological design thinking has been slow to follow. Why do you think this is so and what would you do to improve the situation?

Closing date for Scholarship Applications: 31st March 2017

Who Is Eligible to Apply for a Schumacher College Scholarship?

The decision is not based on financial need. Scholarship applicants, both successful and unsuccessful, are also eligible to apply for a bursary at the same or at a different time.
