1.     What had you been doing prior to beginning your PG course at Schumacher College?

I have owned and operated a restaurant in The Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2009. After 4 years there I decided I wanted to become more deeply involved in the food system as I was concerned about the quality of the food we were eating, and how it is produced. While selling wine in Queenstown for a year I studied part-time basic horticulture papers and a Certificate in applied Biodynamics.

2.     What was it that made you want to take the programme?

After learning more about the food system I realised that what I saw that was not working was in fact not happening in every area of the economy. Having enjoyed an undergraduate in Economics, the programme  at Schumacher was perfect for me as I was looking for a broader understanding of what had gone wrong and how we may be able to fix it. The radical nature of the course was the biggest appeal; I wanted to go somewhere on the cutting edge, that was willing to try new things and push the boundaries because I knew 'conventional' wasn't working. Having seen that Vandana Shiva and so many other great drivers of change were regularly teaching at the College I knew it was the right place for me.

3.     Describe your time at the College?

The biggest surprise for me at Schumacher is how different it is to a normal University. I constantly try to having them come to visit to experience it for themselves. To put it simply, we live in community, a collaborative space where you are encouraged to be whatever you want to be and do whatever you want to do. This really is the place with the happiest people I have ever been. What really appeals is how much is going on at the College, most of which is student led. There is never a dull moment and there are always rich, deep conversations to be had. It really is a transformative experience and I think everyone that comes, even if for a short time will be changed in some way. Having come from a relatively hectic life with a lot of emphasis on competition and making money I have really learnt to slow down and appreciate what is really important.

4.     What have you gone on to do since leaving the College / What do you plan to do?

Because I was aware of the transformative nature of the programs at Schumacher I left this quite open. Being a very organised person who tends to plan a lot, I decided when I came here that I would take things as they come throughout my journey. As a result I am not entirely sure what I will do next, I certainly have a lot of ideas though. I am considering returning to New Zealand to start a social enterprise that will deal with all of the waste from the town where my restaurant is, and turn it into fresh organic produce. What I know is that I want to live in a similar space, with like minded people who feel responsible for what we are doing on this planet. I can't imagine living anywhere else!
