Abelardo Brenes
Abelardo Brenes is currently Research Fellow at the University for Peace (UPEACE), a Treaty Organization created by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1980 and based in Costa Rica and Professor in Promotion of Mental Health in the M.A. in Health Psychology at the University of Costa Rica. He is also a Special Advisor to Earth Charter International and a member of the Expert Group on Monitoring and Evaluation (MEEG) established by UNESCO for the U.N. Decade for Education for Sustainable Education. He is an Advisor to the Minister of Education of the Government of Costa Rica, in national level educational reform in Education for Sustainable Development with a focus on the use of the Earth Charter as a pedagogical framework. In 1989 he directed the Seeking the True Meaning of Peace Conference, which produced the Declaration of Human Responsibilities for Peace and Sustainable Development, which was presented to the General Assembly that same year by the Government of Costa Rica. In the 1990’s he directed several projects using this declaration as a framework throughout Central America in support of peace-building processes in the region, such as the Central American Program for a Culture of Peace and Democracy. More recently he coordinated the design of and directed the M.A. Programme in Peace Education at the University for Peace, from 2002-2006.
