Guy Watson
Guy Watson started growing Organic Vegetables at Riverford Farm in 1986. In association with a supplying co-operative, the business has grown from 3 to 1500 hundred acres over a period of 21 years. The majority of the vegetables are now sold through a door-step delivery, vegetable box scheme. Since ‘98 the distribution and delivery has been developed through a system of regional franchises combined with creative PR and brand development. A supplying co-operative was started in 1997 with the aim of helping neighbouring, mixed, conventional farms to convert to organic farming and vegetables production. Since 2005 the business has grown through the development of regional, sister farms based on the Riverford model in association with local growers. Vegetables and other produce is sourced locally, packed on farm and distributed to doorsteps within an average of 50 miles. Despite the rigours of running a business with 400 staff and a turnover of over £30 million, the driving force behind the business is still an enthusiasm for growing, preparing, sharing and enjoying nutritious, wholesome food with the minimum environmental impact.
