In 2011 Schumacher College will be moving to Higher Close with dramatic views of the River Dart and parkland. The College’s grounds will be gradually redesigned to demonstrate urban food production and ‘edible landscaping’. In addition The College is planning to take on the management of the top half of Aller Park field and create a kitchen garden and mixed orchard, based on the forest garden concept that Martin Crawford has developed on the Dartington Estate.
The new Schumacher College gardens will provide the setting for the College’s programme of accredited sustainable horticulture courses, delivered in partnership with Duchy College and piloted so successfully in 2009 at the College’s current gardens, Dartington Gardens and School Farm. It will also be used by other students on College short courses and masters programmes.
The new gardens on Aller Park field will provide about 20% of the food required for the College catering, especially salads, herbs and fruit (the current garden provides about 10%, including its ‘signature’ forest garden salad).
