Schumacher College experts meet in London to discuss solutions for sustainability crisis
Expert teachers and faculty meet in London’s Cecil Sharp House on Saturday 8th March, hosted by Satish Kumar, presenter of BBC2’s programme Earth Pilgrim, to discuss the most pressing questions about the environment, education and international development.
The expert panel at Cultures of Sustainability will be asked challenging and topical questions by both the Chair on behalf of Schumacher College, and the audience directly. Themes will focus on potential solutions to the environmental crisis, including future pioneers of ecology, the role of development agencies in protecting the environment and the power of education to help transform the sustainability agenda.
The expert panel will include experts from countries around the world: Vandana Shiva, activist and author from India; David Orr, Professor of Environmental Studies at Oberlin College, USA and author of Design on the Edge; and Gustavo Esteva, Advisor to Zapatistas and co-author of Grassroots Post Modernism, from Mexico.
Karen Blincoe, Director of Schumacher College, who will also be on the panel said: ‘This event is really addressing the pressing needs of our time and is an extension of the discussions we have each day at the College. We feel that education, through events like this, provide an opportunity to bring people together to help design the solutions that the planet so urgently needs.’
Satish Kumar, Programme Director at Schumacher College and Chair of this event said: ‘This is a welcome opportunity for people to come together to push the boundaries of what might be possible in dealing with these complex and urgent issues such as climate change and environmental sustainability. We have welcomed so many brilliant teachers and participants to the College since 1991 – we look forward to extending our conversations to the London community.’
Over 150 people are expected to attend. Following the seminar, the Schumacher College virtual forum will be extended to allow discussions from this London event to be opened up to the global community. Thousands of existing global supporters of Schumacher College will be invited to join the solutions-based conversations on-line.
