Roderick James Architects to design new Schumacher College campus

Local architects firm Roderick James Architects have been chosen to undertake the design work for the new Schumacher College campus on the Dartington estate. The project will include the refurbishment of building previously used by the Dartington College of Arts as well as new features and structures to improve the learning space, energy conservation and aesthetics of the campus.

The bid put forward by Roderick James Architects was considered alongside three others, from a shortlist of seven firms. Their initial proposal inspired the selection panel with its promotion of indoor and outdoor learning space, imaginative adjustments of residential capacity and natural approach to improving the look and feel of the site within this beautiful setting. The panel selecting the architects consisted of representatives from The Dartington Hall Trust, including Schumacher College staff and external associates. Consultation was also open to staff, current Schumacher participants and friends in the local community. As the designs develop the project team will consult as widely as possible to support the architects in their creative work.

Schumacher College is planning to expand its activities over the next few years with the introduction of a Masters programme in Economics, and more courses focusing on skills for sustainable land use and for green building. In addition it is introducing open learning and outreach programmes in collaboration with a network of partner organisations around the world. The new campus site will provide additional land to support the work of the college. Providing its main home, Schumacher College will move to the newly refurbished campus in 2012.

The Dartington Hall Trust is investing around £2.4 million of capital investment, and a £1.2 million programme investment in Schumacher College over the next five years in support of this exciting work. The Trust will be launching a major fundraising campaign to secure these funds from individuals, trusts and foundations, corporations, and other sources.

Charlie McConnell, Director of Schumacher College said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Roderick James Architects on this exciting new phase for Schumacher College. Their initial ideas are very inspiring. We are now working closely with the architects on the detailed designs which will be submitted to the Planning authority early in the new year.’
