Who is Allan Jones?
Allan Jones is well known for the pioneering and creative environmental projects he directed in the borough of Woking and the resulting impressive achievements that have set the bar for other organisations and governed groups across the globe. Applying his dynamic experience in a wider context, he is now CEO of the London Climate Change Agency under the London Development Agency. We are very priviledged to have Allan Jones teaching at Schumacher College in October on Sustainability and Leadership: The organisational challenge alongside other innovative leaders.
In Woking, Allan pioneered mass use of photovoltaics (at one point accounting for nearly 10% of these installed in Britain) and a specialist CHP system. The savings environmentally are impressive – a 77.5% decrease in CO2 emissions from 1990 levels. Some of the equally impressive economic savings have been used to offset the investment costs of these and other projects.
Under Allan Jones, the LCCA has the target of reducing emissions across London to 20% less than 1990 levels by 2016. The organisation says it takes a ‘holistic approach to tackling climate change and sustainable development’. So, with this sort of language, it seems natural that we welcome Allan to the College this Autumn to work with you.

Do you know someone who is, or could be, an enterprising leader?
This autumn and winter Schumacher College is running a range of courses for those wanting to develop their leadership and enterprise skills. You might be the most inspired leader you know, or perhaps you know someone who is but would welcome the very special support that is provided by a course at Schumacher College.
On our website, there is now the option to download publicity materials for these courses to pass on to friends and colleagues who might benefit. We welcome participation from across the world and all sectors. One of the biggest gifts in meeting the sustainability challenge is to encourage creative responses in leadership and enterprise. Please help us reach the people that will benefit from our courses.

Earth Pilgrim DVD now released
The much awaited DVD of Satish Kumar presenting Earth Pilgrim as part of the BBC natural world series is now out on DVD.
Walking the moor and exploring woods and rivers, home to a wealth of wildlife including red deer, starling roosts, kestrels and foxes, Satish introduces the Dartmoor scenes and sights that most inspire him – gnarled oak woods, rushing rivers, stags in rut, wild tracts of heather, cuckoos hungry for food, the metamorphosis of moths – and contemplates what they reveal, and the lessons they hold for humanity.

Hot off the press – Holistic Education: Learning from Schumacher College
Schumacher College, set up as an international centre for ecological and spiritual studies, has developed a worldwide reputation for the quality of the unique learning experience it offers. Individuals and groups come from across the world to learn about subjects relating to environmental and social sustainability.
Holistic Education: Learning from Schumacher College is written by the former Director of the College, Anne Phillips. It details how the College came to be set up by The Dartington Hall Trust. It explains the policies and practices adopted to ensure that the learning processes were consistent with, and reinforced by, the topics being studied. It includes examples of what former students have gone on to do, and reflections on the College by visiting teachers including Fritjof Capra, Vandana Shiva, Wolfgang Sachs and David Orr.

Never been to Schumacher College? Hear about it direct from a participantThe fondness for the College is often evident when you talk to Schumacher College alumni. Their respect for the educational process, teachers and the community is evident. Recently, course participant Christina Hurst-Prager attended Soul of Science taught by Arthur Zajonc and Rupert Sheldrake with contributions from Brian Goodwin and Stephan Harding. Hear what she has to say about the experience. Perhaps you have a story to tell. We can’t promise to put everyone’s stories on-line but we love to tell future participants about the College through your words and experience where possible. Email publicity@schumachercollege.org.uk Autumn eventsWhilst we have a busy course programme this autumn, there are no Open Evenings at Schumacher College. However, we will be involved with other events. We will put these on the web to let you know what is going on. See our events section for more info. |
