Starhawk comes to Schumacher to teach on Sacred Activism course

We are delighted that Starhawk will be teaching on our forthcoming course Sacred Activism this summer. Starhawk is the author or co-author of ten books including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess, and is internationally known for reviving earth-based spirituality, bringing techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism.

Starhawk will teach skills and tools that will help participants to remain calm in stressful and chaotic situations, to hold a centre of peace amidst violence, to withstand conflict and to heal from trauma. Her sessions will be experiential, and every day will involve ritual, personal practice, and group support.

Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim will also teach on this course, both bringing a wealth of traching and research experience from some of the most prestigious programmes and universities in the USA.

Featured Course 2008 – 09 Roots of Learning: Educating the whole person

Schumacher College is well known for helping people engage with transformative learning. Within this powerful experience is the concept of holistic education and the need to look at both teacher and student as a whole people. Our Roots of Learning series continues to support this type of engagement for all those working in the education sector.

Our next Roots of Learning course will be taught by Jack Miller who has been working in the field of holistic education for over 30 years. An experienced educator and author he teaches courses on holistic education and spirituality in education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto where he is Professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning.

During this course, with participants, Jack will focus on how we can teach the whole person. The theory and practice of holistic learning will be explored through experiential learning. The course will also examine how teachers and facilitators can nourish their own wholeness through contemplative practices.

Roots of Learning: Educating the whole person, November 3 – 7. Details for this course are on our website.

Featured Teacher 2008 – 09 Earth Jurisprudence: Making the law work for nature – Mellese Damtie

Schumacher College will open its doors to some of the most respected legal professionals from across the world this year during the dynamic course, Earth Jurisprudence. Their collective legal experience from South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and the UK will bring this subject to life for course participants. In this newsletter we feature the work of one of the course teachers Mellese Damtie.

Mellese is an Ethiopian lawyer and biologist who has been pioneering research and implementation of Earth Jurisprudence (EJ) from his unique position as Dean of the Ethiopian Civil Service College’s Department of Law, Addis Ababa. He is also Chief Legal Advisor for Ethiopian NGO, Movement for Ecological Learning and Community Action (MELCA), and plays a key role in paralegal training for local communities on their rights and legal opportunities to gain recognition for governing and protecting their territories.

Mellese will be joined by a number of other expert teachers: Cormac Cullinan, Ng’ang’a Thiong’o, Ian Mason and Elizabeth Rivers.

Clare Short MP talks about her time visiting Schumacher College and Transition Town Totnes

Just before Easter, I accepted an invitation to contribute to a course on development at Schumacher College which is situated in the grounds of Dartington Hall, near Totnes. The college is famous for its commitment to environmental sustainability as is the Dartington Trust.

On the road sign for Totnes someone has painted “Twinned with Narnia”. It is a beautiful part of the world and large numbers of green minded, alternative sorts of people live there. This has made Totnes the ideal place for the birth of the Transition Towns movement….

My question is could we make Birmingham a transition city? Bristol has joined the network as have Brixton and Nottingham and many smaller places. I would love Birmingham to get involved.

Animate Earth – a screen adaptation of Stephan Harding’s book

Clive Ardagh and Barbara Tam (both MSc students from 2007) are producing a screen adaption of Stephan Harding’s book Animate Earth. In his book, Stephan, resident ecologist and MSc Coordinator at Schumacher College explores how a more holistic scientific process can broaden our perception of the natural world, inform subsequent understanding and result in a deep reconnection with the Earth.

The film Animate Earth is combining footage of the universal language of nature with interviews (Jim Lovelock, Fritjof Capra, Stephan Harding, Brian Goodwin) and animation to communicate on both an intellectual and emotional level. Funding and distribution is presently being sought – television/web broadcast, education- and the result will be available on DVD by the end of this year. For more information.
