Newsletter: December 2008

Seasons Greetings from everyone at Schumacher College

Dear friends,

Welcome to a special seasonal issue of the Schumacher College newsletter. This month at the College we are experiencing the fantastic changes of the season, as every morning the plants and trees in the gardens glitter with the sparkle of frost. However there are changes inside too as friends and colleagues both join and leave the College. We have also launched a series of new courses for May- July and are welcoming many new participants to an exciting range of programmes in the New Year.

Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year!

From everyone at Schumacher College.

What’s the future of health care?

Certificate in Sustainable Health- Closing date for applications 15th January 2009

Health care has become more sophisticated but also more specialised, institutionalised and expensive. Meanwhile its core values, of caring, relationships and individual attention are increasingly sought outside the mainstream, and old approaches to family and self care are marginalised.
The new Certificate in Sustainable Health will cover topics including; living systems, self organisaiton, placebo, living and dying, and planning health service delivery. For full details of the programme click here

Teachers include:
Simon Mills (Teaching Fellow in Sustainable Health/SustainCare Brian Goodwin (Schumacher College) Robert Duggan (Tai Sophia Institute) Nicky Britten (Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry) Tim Harlow (Consultant in Palliative Medicine) Peter Conway (Herbal Practitioner) Helen Cooke (Complementary Health Practitioner) Alex Laird (Medical Herbalist) Ruth Sewell (Lecturer & academic in holistic health care & cancer care) David Peters (Doctor & Complementary Health Practitioner)

New course addresses the global economic crisis

Embedding Holistic Economics Jan 26th – Feb 13

Something about our global economic system is broken. I say that not as an environmentalist or as a human rights activist, but as a former managing director and nearly twenty-year veteran of JPMorgan and subsequently a hedge fund CEO.

The above quote, by John Fullerton, is taken from his essay published by The Schumacher Society in May 2008, “The Relevance of E.F. Schumacher in the 21st Century.” As his quote states, John is a former MD of JPMorgan and CEO of an energy focused hedge fund.

We anticipate hosting an eclectic mix of course participants, from activists and “alternative economists” to mainstream financiers and economists, like John Fullerton, who are recognising there is a need for economic change and are now willing to explore what is for them radically new economic territory.

Changing Faces

This December Schumacher College is saying goodbye to our Director- Karen Blincoe who is sadly leaving the College after more than two years in post. Karen joined us from Denmark, where in 2001 she founded ICIS, The International Centre for Creativity, Innovation and Sustainability which focused on Continuing Professional Development for designers and architects in sustainability and innovation.

Karen is now returning home to spend more time with friends and family but will be staying firmly in touch with everyone at the College as she remains closely involved with a range of programmes including the Certificate in Education for Sustainability on which she teaches. We wish her well and look forward to seeing her again in the spring.

We are thrilled to announce that Charlie McConnell has been appointed Director of Sustainability for the Dartington Hall Trust (which includes Schumacher College). Charlie, who was the Former CEO of Carnegie UK Trust, joins us at a hugely exciting time in the charity’s development and his arrival marks a new phase in Dartington’s continuing work in renewable energy and environmental education. Speaking of his appointment he said

“I am delighted to be joining one of the UK’s most progressive independent charities, with a strong commitment to providing high quality research and learning opportunities around creativity, the environment and social justice. Dartington and Schumacher College have a vital role to play over the coming years, as an international centre of learning for those trying to address such critical issues as climate change.”
