Breaking bread with Andrew Whitley and Carlo Petrini
Baker, Andrew Whitley and founder of the Slow Food movement, Carlo Petrini are urging everyone to rise to the challenge of ‘rethinking how we eat’ at an event taking place on Wednesday 19th November.
Organised by Schumacher College, Slow Food Devon and Slow Food Plymouth, this event brings together two champions of a saner, healthier and more sustainable food system for an evening of discussion and the sharing of ideas – and food. Tickets for the event, which takes place in the Great Hall at Dartington are on sale now.
Carlo Petrini founded Slow Food, an international organisation which has progressed from campaigning for quality food to demanding that food be produced in environmentally and socially responsible ways – as well as tasting delicious. He will explain how the debate about the future of food and agriculture is closely linked to issues of environmental and public health, poverty and social justice, land reform and the energy crisis.
Andrew Whitley will focus on bread, which like so many other foods has become industrialised and de-natured, leading to widespread wheat intolerance and other nutritional problems. His Real Bread Campaign aims to bring British bread back to life and make home baking and small-scale production more widespread.
After questions and discussion time, there will be the opportunity to carry on the conversations and enjoy samples from local producers who are involved with Slow Food, as well as bread made with Andrew in the Schumacher College kitchens that day.
Tickets, for the event which starts at 7.30pm, are available through The Barn box office on 01803-847-070 or online at: www.dartington.org. Alternatively guests can purchase tickets on the door.
