Dartington Appoints New Director of Sustainability
On 1 December 2008, Charlie McConnell will join the Trust as Dartington’s first Director of Sustainability – overseeing the internationally renowned Schumacher College, the Land Scope Project and Dartington’s much publicised sustainability drive.
Charlie McConnell is the former Chief Executive of the Carnegie UK Trust, an independent non-profit making organisation set up by Scots-American Andrew Carnegie to support progressive social change.
He joins Dartington as Director of Sustainability at a hugely exciting time in the charity’s development and his arrival marks a new phase for Dartington’s work in renewable energy and environmental education,
“I am delighted to be joining one of the UK’s most progressive independent charities, with a strong commitment to providing high quality research and learning opportunities around creativity, the environment and social justice. Dartington and Schumacher College have a vital role to play over the coming years, as an international centre of learning for those trying to address such critical issues as climate change.”
During his 5 years as Chief Executive of Carnegie, Charlie supported action and research initiatives on strengthening civil society, sustainable rural development, democracy, youth empowerment, social justice and climate change. He also played a leading role in creating the UK’s first university research centres for philanthropy and charitable giving.
Chief Executive Vaughan Lindsay said, “Charlie McConnell is a hugely experienced and energetic individual – who will play a major role in helping Dartington become a Centre of Excellence in Sustainability – daring to pioneer experimental solutions to some of the most pressing environmental problems of our time.”
