MSc in Holistic Science
Accredited by and delivered in partnership with the University of Plymouth this distinctive Masters degree continues to attract international participation from intelligent, aware and motivated individuals who are dedicated to addressing the interlinked and massively accelerating ecological and social crises of our times.

Graduates of this MSc are equipped to challenge orthodox reductionist thinking in a variety of areas, including science, by means of a radically holistic and deeply transformative integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches and methodologies. There is no other academic institution that offers a University accredited degree for studying science and its wider implications in this way.

MSc Co-ordinator and Lecturer in Ecology and Holistic Science: Dr Stephan Harding; Lecturer in Complexity and Holistic Science: Philip Franses
Visiting faculty include: Francoise Wemelsfelder, Rupert Sheldrake, Lynn Margulis, Henri Bortoft, Craig Holdrege, Jules Cashford, Gideon Kossoff, Patricia Shaw, Peter Reason, Bernadette Brady, Margaret Colquhoun.

This full-time year-long programme is the first Masters degree to present a coherent methodology of holistic inquiry, providing a rigorous and ethical framework for a mature science.

Inspired science teachers: changing the world through changing our world views

Challenging the status quo whilst retaining academic credibility is at the heart of what we do at Schumacher College. We owe a debt of gratitude to the esteemed teachers who visit or reside at the College for providing the varied stimuli through which transformational learning takes place here. Our teachers present and explore material that is often challenging and disturbing as well as being inspiring and uplifting, helping students and short course participants to perceive the world differently and to act accordingly. This year promises more potent life-changing educational opportunities through the inspirational science teaching of Fritjof Capra, Sean Kelly, Rupert Sheldrake and of our own resident teacher and MSc in Holistic Science Co-ordinator, Stephan Harding.

Creativity, Perception and the Modern Mind: Leonardo and the Search for Holism A two-week course, May 17 – 28
Fritjof Capra and Peter Adams, a scientist and an artist who have both been frequent visitors to Schumacher College, will discuss Leonardo da Vinci’s synthesis and its great relevance to our time. Iain McGilchrist, author of the recently published book, The Master and his Emissary will join the course for one day as Guest Lecturer. As well as presenting his ideas, Iain will spend time in discussion with Fritjof and Peter on how his research relates to their work on broader issues of creativity. Participants will be engaged not only intellectually, but also physically and emotionally in the application of Leonardo’s methodology through observation, experimentation, and artistic expression within the Dartington landscape.

“…in contemporary scientific terms, [Leonardo da Vinci is] a systemic thinker, ecologist, and complexity theorist; a scientist and artist with a deep reverence for all life, and a man with a strong desire to work for the benefit of humanity.”

Fritjof Capra, The Science of Leonardo, Preface pXIX, Doubleday 2007

Gaia and the Evolution of Consciousness One or two-week course, June 21 – July 2
During both weeks, holistic scientist and MSc in Holistic Science Co-ordinator Stephan Harding will introduce the science underlying Gaia theory using a combination of rational analysis and experiential work outdoors, enabling participants both to understand the theory in their heads and to feel it in their hearts. In tandem with Stephan’s teaching, Sean Kelly will place this new way of understanding our earth within the wider context of humanity’s shift into an emerging ‘Planetary Era’ in which a new ecological consciousness comes to the fore. Rupert Sheldrake joins the course for two days to reflect on what new advances in science can tell us about our minds and the nature of the cosmos as a whole.
