What is the Schumacher Certificate in Education for Sustainability?
This course has been created in response to a need for new forms of education and a new generation of educators in these challenging times. Taking a participative and creative approach, students are finding that questions of sustainability and the radical culture change necessary offer exciting opportunities to go beyond what we currently understand as educational practice. The Certificate in Education offers a space to experiment around the theme of education in a supportive, challenging and nurturing environment.

For the first time in my life I can say that I experienced a transformative learning process. A process that started and I am sure it will continue for all my life. Current participant, Alex Bianciardi, Environmental Consultant, Cyprus |
Does it work?
Whilst relatively new, it is clear at this point that this innovative programme has been as successful in supporting the professional and personal development of students as we had hoped. Already they are integrating new ideas and practices into their work as educators for sustainability, and creating a strong peer network for future collaborations.
Resulting projects so far include; the design of a sustainability education platform for a University in Brazil, a collaborative building programme with academics and excluded youth in Wales and an Anglo-Indian programme for lifelong learning based on the ideas of Rabindranath Tagore.
The current group are also presenting together at a special event at Bradford Universality to share learnings with the education community.
