THE SCHUMACHER CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

A vocational platform in holistic, transformative, adult education.
For educators, facilitators and change agents.

For the first time in my life I can say that I experienced a transformative learning process. A process that started and I am sure it will continue for all my life. Current participant, Alex Bianciardi, Environmental Consultant, Cyprus

Here at Schumacher College, we are completing the first year of our Certificate in Education. It is clear at this point that this innovative programme has been as successful in supporting the professional and personal development of eleven dynamic individuals as we had hoped. Already they are integrating new ideas and practices into their work as educators for sustainability, and creating a strong peer network for future collaborations. A diverse and international group, they are working in a host of areas in academia, professional training and as independent educators.

The course offers a strong foundation in education for sustainability and participative learning, while also exploring themes such as complexity and change, creativity and inner leadership. Through form and content it is designed to address the fundamental changes necessary to move towards a sustainable future. For more course details, please see our website http://www.schumachercollege.org.uk/courses/certificate-in-education. Through the part-time action learning structure, each student has created their own learning journey through the year, supporting their work out in the world.

It is activist and academic at the same time, it’s about teaching without preaching and is truly holistic in the sense that it combines heart, hand and head. Current participant, Natalia Eernstman, Lecturer in the Department of Education and Competence Studies at the Wageningen University, Holland

The ‘head, heart and hands’ approach of the programme has provided a rich foundation for students to engage with the complex and often difficult issues that are integral to responding to the crisis’ of our times through education. The depth of the group work and the creativity involved in all modules mean that these responses are dynamic and effective both for the group in their own learning experience, and in their educative practice.

…since discovering Peak Oil and hearing about the urgency of our response… I still wonder whether it wouldn’t be nicer to just not know and not care about this stuff… But in my heart I know its right, and that with all the struggle at all levels… I can’t think of a more wonderful way to be responding given the urgency of the issues and the size of the stakes. Current participant, Mark Skipper, Learning and Change practitioner

The course draws upon the College’s international reputation in ‘broad and deep’ sustainability teachings. It also boasts an expert team of core and visiting faculty, within a highly participative format, thereby providing fertile ground for an educational experience that is both practical and radical.

I am delighted to be involved in the Schumacher Certificate in Education, which gives students a rich space to explore education for sustainability in its widest form. Not only does the programme give students a platform to really develop their understanding and skills but also us, as course contributors, a chance to benefit from their various journeys in this area. Peter Reason, Director of Centre for Action Research in Professional Practice, University of Bath (contributor to the Certificate in Education)

Applications are now closed for the 2009 Schumacher Certificate in Education for Sustainability. We are happy to receive enquiries for 2010 and will post the course dates and application deadlines when available.
