How to get to Schumacher College
By Train
Totnes is on the Inter-city train network with journeys taking about three hours from London Paddington, three and a half hours from Birmingham and thirty minutes from Plymouth. There are various tickets available which can be purchased in advance or at the time of your journey.
From the train station
If you would like to bring your bicycle, there is a cycle path from the railway station to the Dartington Estate. Go through the South Devon Railway car park and follow the signpost for Riverside Walk. This takes you along the river to the main drive to Dartington Hall. The cycle path continues to the Cider Press and onwards to Schumacher College. Total distance is about 2 miles.
Pedestrians can use the cycle path between the station and the College. It takes about 40 minutes. Taxis from Totnes Station to Schumacher College cost about £5 (Fares are slightly more expensive on Sundays and Bank Holidays)
By Car
Please use public transport combined with taxis, foot and bike when at Schumacher College, wherever possible.
Dartington lies a few miles South of the main A38 Exeter to Plymouth Devon Expressway which links at Exeter to the M5 and the rest of the motorway system. From the M5 at Exeter, take the A38 as far as the A384 Buckfastleigh turn-off and follow the signs for Totnes. After about five miles there is a roadside sign for Dartington. A little further on, turn left at Dartington Church.
From Plymouth, take the A38 as far as the A385 turn-off beyond South Brent, signposted Dartington. On reaching the mini-roundabout in Dartington (approx. 3 miles) with the Cider Press Centre in front of you, take the left exit towards Buckfastleigh and Ashburton and after about quarter of a mile turn right at Dartington Church.
The Old Postern is the first building on the left next to Dartington Church. For easiest unloading, take the second left off the side-road, go up the narrow access lane and left again into a tarmac area in front of the main reception.
There is plenty of car parking, although we ask people not to leave their cars in front of reception but in the main car parking area, situated at the end of the main College drive.
Schumacher College is part of the Dartington Hall Trust, a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and as a charity (company no. 1485560, charity no. 279756). Registered office: The Elmhirst Centre, Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon TQ9 6EL, UK.
