Weekend Workshop and Research Paper Launch
Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September 2008
Lea Green Development and Conference Centre
Peak District, Derbyshire, UK
The concept of Wild Law proposes a rethink of our legal and political systems to stop environmental destruction, but can we translate it into practical action? Is Wild Law more than just an idea? Can Wild Law be treated as a coherent body of law and practice? Which practical examples can guide us? Join us for this highly interactive two-night residential workshop where we will be discussing these questions and launching the results of an international research project on the practical application of Wild Law.
Workshop leaders include Professor Lynda Warren, emeritus professor at Aberystwyth University, environmental consultant and the research supervisor; Mellese Damtie, Ethiopian lawyer and biologist, Dean of Legal Department at Ethiopia’s Civil Service College, where he supervises students to study the customary laws that traditional people use to govern their relationship with nature; and Andrew Kimbrell, public interest attorney, activist and author, executive director of The Center for Food Safety in USA and founder of the International Center for Technology Assessment.
Also featuring Begonia Filgueira, of Gaia Law Ltd, and Ian Mason, barrister, research paper supervisors – both lawyer members of UKELA’s Council; Cormac Cullinan, an environmental lawyer based in Cape Town, South Africa, author of Wild Law: A Manifesto for Earth Justice, a director of the leading South African environmental law firm, Winstanley & Cullinan Inc, and CEO of EnAct International, an environmental governance consultancy; and Ng’ang’a Thiong’o, Legal Advocate for Porini Association, Kenya, and former advisor to 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Professor Wangari Maathai.
