Roots of Learning: Strategies for creative social change

February 23 — 27, 2009

Kate Davies

Education can play a critical role in helping to transform our society. A key question for educators is: How can we prepare learners to lead the changes that are necessary to achieve social and ecological sustainability?

Course Overview

This course will explore learning strategies that can help create a sustainable, equitable and healthy world. Participants will examine several innovative approaches including collaborative learning, reflective practice, participatory action research, community engagement, and dialogue. These and other approaches will be integrated into a holistic model of education for creative social change. This will be accomplished by forming a class ‘learning community’ in which participants learn from each other, as well as from the ideas and experiences of leading educators for social change.

This course is intended for: adult and university educators, teachers at all levels of education, community workers and individuals who are on a learning path that combines their personal lives with a local and global vision of education.

This course is run in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Futures at the University of Plymouth.
